Getting frustrated with your puppy?
Is she treating your house like one big chew toy, or having a hard time mastering housetraining? Is she jumping up on you when you’d rather she didn’t? Great news – most canine behavior problems can be easily lessened or eliminated outright by some basic dog training. Just check some of these tips out!
Understand that training dogs can be frustrating since some dogs have a more difficult time learning obedience than others. Always try not to lose your temper and resist the urge to scream or shout at your dog. Also, never hit your dog as this will only serve to confuse it and will actually make training more difficult.
For dogs that tend to pull, consider the equipment you are using. The neck is the strongest part of a dog’s body, so walking dogs on collars will only work for dogs that are already very mellow. A head halter or an appropriate harness will help for pulling dogs. Harnesses should clip from the front, as ones that clip in the back may encourage pulling more.
Crate-training is excellent for dogs with separation anxiety. Crates effectively become safe spaces for nervous dogs. Blankets or dirty laundry that smells like their favorite people can be helpful during the crate-training process. Anxious dogs are also likely to be destructive when their owners are not home. A crate keeps anxious dogs out of harm’s way.
You should develop a feeding routine with your dog. He has to know when the food will arrive and it should be on schedule, but he also needs to know when the food will be removed again. Your dog will eat their food in the time that you have allotted.
Start your dog off on the right foot by installing good habits early on. it is more difficult for your dog has to unlearn bad habits than it is to teach him good habits. For example, if you are adamant about your dog not being a beggar, then never make any exceptions to handing him food from your table.
If your dog leaps on you, hold his paws and squeeze them a little so he will know this is not acceptable. This does not hurt the dog if you do it lightly, but it is an uncomfortable feeling for them. They will stop doing this behavior since it will be associated with a negative feeling.
As you can see from the above list of tips, dog training can be very useful in getting your dog to behave and to even do a few cool tricks. After following these tips, you will no longer be new to dog training, instead you will be on your way to becoming a dog training expert.
