Are you thinking or raising your own queen bees?

If you are keeping bees you may at some time wish to try breeding your own queens, if you do you will need to know how to make queen candy for bees.

How do you make queen candy for bees?

Queen candy is a soft fondant that is placed inside a queen cage to provide food for the queen and her attendants. When shipping queens the post office requires 7 attendants to accompany her. They will need food along the way to insure that the queen and her court arrive in good condition.

What you will need to make your queen candy for bees

  • small bowl
  • fork for mixing
  • corn syrup
  • powdered sugar

To make your queen candy for bees, you will need to place a pile of powdered sugar in the center of the bowl, then place a small indent into the middle of the powdered sugar.

Pour some corn syrup into the indent you made in the powdered sugar, not too much, you can always make more later if you need a larger quantity of queen candy for bees.

Using your fork, you will mix the two together until they form a sticky glob.

Add more powdered sugar as necessary.

Once the mixture is too thick to work with the fork, you will now work it with your fingers adding more powdered sugar as necessary. Work the sugar until it is soft and pliable, but no longer sticky.

Now you can roll some of the queen candy for bees that you just made into a short rope, to put into the candy end of your queen cages.

queen cage

For the queen cages you get from me, you will put the queen candy into the long neck of the tube.

Then cover with the pink plastic candy cap.

When you introduce the queen bee to the queen cage you also need to add 7 attendants to the cage. These attendants will eat your queen candy for bees and keep your queen well fed while she is being shipped or introduced to her new bee hive.

Don’t forget to remove the pink cap to release the queen after 3 or 4 days
